For MBBS admission in 2025, students must qualify in NEET-UG by scoring above the cut-off marks declared by NTA. The minimum qualifying percentile is 50th percentile for general category and 40th percentile for reserved categories.

Based on previous years' trends, this typically translates to approximately 120-140 marks out of 720 for general category students and 100-110 marks for reserved category students. However, the actual score may vary each year based on the difficulty level of the exam and the number of candidates appearing.

How many MBBS seats are available in India for 2025?

For the 2025 academic year, approximately 99,000+ MBBS seats are available across 612 medical colleges in India. This includes:

  • Around 52,000 seats in 325 government medical colleges
  • Around 47,000 seats in 287 private medical colleges

The number of seats has increased by approximately 2,000 compared to the previous year due to the establishment of new medical colleges and expansion of existing ones.

What is the fee structure for MBBS in government vs private colleges?

The fee structure for MBBS varies significantly between government and private medical colleges in India:

  • Government Medical Colleges: Annual tuition fees range from ₹10,000 to ₹90,000, with an average of around ₹25,000-₹50,000 per year. Total course expenses including hostel and other fees may range from ₹2-5 lakhs for the entire 5.5-year course.
  • Private Medical Colleges: Annual tuition fees range from ₹5 lakhs to ₹25 lakhs, with an average of around ₹12-18 lakhs per year. Total course expenses may range from ₹50 lakhs to ₹1.25 crores for the entire course.
  • Deemed Universities: Annual tuition fees range from ₹15 lakhs to ₹30 lakhs, with total course expenses potentially exceeding ₹1.5 crores.

Additionally, many private colleges have separate fee structures for management quota and NRI quota seats, which can be significantly higher.

What is the NEXT exam and how will it affect MBBS students?

The National Exit Test (NEXT) is a new examination that will replace the existing NEET-PG. It will be implemented from 2026 as per the latest NMC guidelines.

Key aspects of NEXT:

  • It will serve as a common qualifying final year MBBS exam for Indian medical graduates
  • It will be used for obtaining license to practice medicine in India
  • It will also serve as an entrance exam for postgraduate medical courses
  • The exam will be conducted in two parts: NEXT Step 1 (theory) and NEXT Step 2 (practical/clinical skills)
  • Indian students graduating in 2026 will need to clear NEXT

This unified examination aims to standardize medical education and ensure consistent quality of medical graduates across India.
